ABSTRACT:
Liberalisation of energy sectors provides challenges and opportunities alike for operators of buildings. The European Directive dealing with the Energy Efficiency in Buildings is also a good frame which enables these opportunities [1]. Exposure to energy prices and CO2-emissions restrictions create incentives to adopt more energy-efficient technologies. Yet, market and technological uncertainties necessitate decision support for risk management.

We present a decision support system (DSS) being developed for integrated management of energy efficient buildings. This tool intends to provide decision support for building owners to help them meet their needs in a more efficient, less costly, and less CO2-intensive manner.

The DSS will be linked with the existing ICT for controlling each site's energy sub-systems, thereby facilitating the operators’ short-term operational problem, which means real-time on-site generation dispatch, off-site energy purchases from diverse sources, and open positions in energy markets. The DSS will also provide long-term strategic planning to the building manager aimed at improving energy efficiency, in particular analysis of retrofits and/or expansion of on-site energy sub-systems, in order to meet forthcoming EU targets for reducing CO2 emissions.

This paper will give an overview of both modules. It analyses deeply the operational module focused on the short term planing, how it has been conceived starting from mathematical formulation, and ending with some validation at two Spanish test facilities, one in Asturias and the other one in Bizkaia.
The DSS and related research are supported by the EnRiMa project funded by the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission.
