The pernicious influence of non-metallic inclusions on steel - and more especially cementing - has created the problem of their exclusion, a problem of great importance that remains without concrete and adequate solution; Moreover, the conclusions deduced by various essayists are sometimes even contradictory.We limit our study by strictly adhering to the current procedures for the manufacture of steels in basic Siemens-Martin and electric furnaces, glossing over some of the lately appeared works and summarizing at the end our current opinion on this matter, although it is very flattering that -conducted from our essays-coincides with some of these modern ideas we are certain that they are neither unique nor even exact.
