ENERGY TRANSITION: THE ROAD TO 2030

The year 2030 has long been seen as a target for meeting many short- and medium-term goals that society has set itself to address the energy transition to zero carbon. While carbon emissions will most likely be reduced by 20% in 2020 compared to 1990, it is unclear whether the 40% target set for 2030 will be met. As a result, due to its proximity, it is starting to sound obsolete and the EU is starting to look at more credible time-bound targets towards 2050. The national energy plans for the next decade submitted by member states do not add up to the reduction needed to meet the target, while in the context of the European Green Deal a more ambitious reduction of 55% by 2030 has been discussed.
