El problema de extraer de un buque de guerra hundido durante la II Guerra Mundial el combustible que empezaba a salir de sus depósitos se ha resuelto de un modo elegante gracias al compromiso entre la Royal Navy (que quería que el buque, tumba de los 883 marinos que viajaban a bordo cuando se hundió, permanecieraintacto) y los ecologistas que avisaron del peligro inminente. Durante 60 años, el poderoso HMS Royal Oak, hundido cerca de Scapa Flow con 883 tripulantes a bordo, había sido la tumba de estos cadáveres. Desde la noche de octubre de 1939 en que los torpedos de
un submarino alemán hundieron el barco, el gasóleo que llevaba en sus depósitos había ido saliendo poco a poco hasta aparecer en la superficie.
En los últimos años, el problema se había agravado, pues al irse corroyendo la chapa metálica, la rotura de los depósitos podía haber dado lugar
a un gran desastre ecológico.
