ABSTRACT:
In this paper, it is presented a study of communication buses and protocols that are mainly used in automation facilities. Assessment and selection are based upon the context of previously constructed homes to be automated in order to facilitate and improve the livability of them.
Buses are divided into two main branches: the guided one, they are those that need a physical medium to transmit information; and the unguided, those one that do not need it because they use radio signals or infrared frequency to achieve their goal.
Other hand we present some protocols used in home automation to transmit information such as KNX, X-10, Bluetooth, WiFi, ZigBee, Lon Works-Lon Talk, and BatiBus are assessed.
The selection criterion is of the bus and protocol was based on an industrial technique called Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA), which allows the identification of potential errors in the production process by weighting the occurrence, severity and fault detection. This technique is modified to select the bus and protocol by getting the lowest rate of potential failures.
