La exhaustación de las máquinas de vapor, bien sean máquinas alternativas o turbinas, se conduce a un «condensador de superficie», con objeto de recuperar el agua del vapor condensado, a fin de economizar el agua purificada que se precisa para la alimentación de la caldera y, además, utilizar para la alimentación un agua que ya tiene una cierta temperatura, con lo que se disminuye el consumo de combustible de la caldera para una determinada producción de vapor. Los condensadores pueden ser «atmosféricos» o «de vacío». Los primeros tienen su interior en comunicación con el aire ambiente, por lo que su interior está a la presión atmosférica. Cuando las máquinas son de cierta potencia se hace el vacío dentro del condensador por medio de bombas de aire o de eyectores de vapor, aspirando una mezcla de aire y vapor.
