Los cables eléctricos empleados en interior del recinto de contención en centrales nucleares (CN) deben tener propiedades sobresalientes de resistencia a la irradiación. Las condiciones de trabajo previstas, a las que se añaden las condiciones ambientales en caso de accidente, superan las exigencias en cables de uso en instalaciones convencionales. En particular, en el caso de una central de construcción reciente, las condiciones exigidas eran
- 40 años de trabajo con 90 °C en el conductor.
- Nivel de radiación total (trabajo normal y accidentes) de 150 Mrads. (100 Mrads ayos y + 50 Mrads partículas ( ).
- Perfil de accidente con una punta máxima de 200 °C y una duración de 10 días.
- Período de post-accidente de 1 año con 105 °C en el conductor. Para soportar estas condiciones resulta esencial que los materiales empleados tengan una resistencia sobresaliente a la irradiación.
