El ciclo convencional de vapor de agua requiere, para alcanzar altos rendimientos de transformación, recurrir a instalaciones notablemente complejas, con altas presiones y ternperaturas, recalentamiento del vapor a una presión intermedia y turbinas de gran número de etapas con bastantes extracciones para el precalentamiento regenerativo del condensado. El alto coste de estas soluciones hace que en instalaciones de menos de 100 MWe, ya sea preciso comenzar a simplificar el esquema, en especial eliminando el recalentamiento intermedio y reduciendo la presion maxima para evitar el incremento excesivo del porcentaje de humedad en la turbina. Todo ello redunda en una disminución del rendimiento de transformación, que se hace especialmente notable en aquellas aplicaciones, como la incineración de basuras, que no permiten elevar la temperatura maxima por encima de 500° C. Ello obliga a reducir, aún mas, la presion de trabajo con la consiguiente disminución del nivel termico medio de absorción de calor y, por tanto, del rendimiento.
