La adquisicion por Renfe del nuevo material motor de AV Plan de Transporte Ferroviario (PTF), supone la incorporacion del ferrocarril espanol a las nuevas tendencias mundiales en el campo especifico de la traccion electrica. En lo que se refiere al Tren de Alta Velocidad (TAV), la tecnologia francesa elegida utiliza motores sincronos autopilotados, en los que su propia f.c.e.m. produce la extincion de los tiristores del ondulador de conmutacion natural que les controla. Respecto a las locomotoras de AV, la tecnologia alemana seleccionada emplea motores asincronos trifasicos, cuya tension de alimentacion y frecuencia son reguladas por un ondulador provisto de tiristores GTO (gate turn oft). Constructora de Equipos electricos S.A. (Conelec), anteriormente General Electrica Espahola S.A., participara activamente en la fabricacion de los equipos electricos de estos trenes y locomotoras, tanto en lo que se refiere a los motores electricos, como a los equipos de control de las dos tecnologias seleccionadas.
