Uno de los grandes retos al que se enfrentan los cirujanos vasculares a día de hoy, es la evaluación precisa del riesgo de ruptura de los aneurismas de aorta abdominal, lo que les permitiría tomar las decisiones más adecuadas de acuerdo al estado clínico de cada paciente y al grado de desarrollo de la patología. El actual pensa miento clínico generalizado es que la ruptura del aneurisma se pronostica monitorizando su diámetro máximo y/o su tasa de crecimiento, aconsejándose la intervención quirúrgica cuando el aneurisma alcanza 5-5.5 cm de diámetro y/o crece 0.5 cm/año. Sin embargo, se ha demostrado que estos criterios, aunque tienen una base empírica significativa, son insuficientes pues no tienen una fundamentación físicamente consistente y fallan.
