RESUMEN
Es incuestionable la necesidad urgente de la investigación y de la innovación tecnológica para la supervivencia básica de la vida y del bienestar de la Sociedad. Se insiste en que la comunidad tenga fe en sus ideas y los desarrollos de los innovadores redundarán en beneficio público. Es una defensa esperanzada, junto con una exhortación de fe y compromiso ante un torrente interminable de ideas fundamentales y de mecanismos nuevos. Se hace hincapié en las circunstancias históricas que favorecen la innovación y las conexiones que se establecen. Las Matemáticas, por su grado de bstracción, transcienden cualquier campo de aplicación y pueden ser un poderoso órgano de invención e innovación. Las ideas, sin embargo, tan sólo son un elemento de la innovación fructífera.
Todavía se necesitan grandes innovaciones y cambios sociales, políticos y económicos para asegurar que las tecnologías existentes y futuras
presten un gran servicio a la Humanidad.

SEARCH AND INNOVATION ARE BOTH NECESSARY

ABSTRACT
The urgent need for research and technological innovation is indisputable for the basic survival of life and the welfare of Society. It is essential that the community has faith in its idea and then innovator developments will result in public benefit. As well as a hopeful defence, it is also an exhortation of faith and commitment towards an endless torrent of fundamental ideas and new mechanisms. We must emphasize the importance of the historical circumstances which favour innovation and the connections which are established.
Mathematics, because of its degree of abstraction, transcends any field of application and can be a powerful instrument of invention and innovation.
However, ideas are only one element of fruitful innovation. Great innovations and social political and economic changes are still needed to ensure that existing and future technologies provide a great service to Humanity.
