ABSTRACT This paper shows a method for fast design and implementation of intelligent controllers in hard real-time applications. The method is applied for designing and implementing a fuzzy control system to optimize a high-performance machining process (drilling). The design is based on computer aided design software and a computerized numerical control (CNC) with open architecture. The open CNC and the availability of an industrial field bus (Profibus) facilitate the implementation and validation of this prototype. Positive tests results are yielded in experimental identifica- tion and fuzzy logic-based control of cutting force by the suggested technique compared with a PID controller designed using the Ziegler-Nichols method. Key words: intelligent control, fuzzy control design, open architecture CNC, Profibus, drilling process.
