La utilización de fuentes de energía renovables ha aumentado en las últimas décadas, pero el acceso al capital es la principal barrera en el denominado financiamiento verde. Los proyectos del sector de energía renovable (proyectos RES) son generalmente más costosos, con mayor riesgo y un mayor plazo de recuperación. El crowdfunding se ha convertido en una nueva y atractiva fuente de financiación para proyectos RES, donde éstos son financiados por una "multitud" de personas.
