Las propiedades de utilización de los metales son consecuencia de propiedades intrínsecas de éstos, ligadas la mayor parte de las veces a su arquitectura interna. Los metales o aleaciones industriales están constituidos por un agregado de pequeños cristales -granos o monocristales-, caracterizados, a su vez, por un apilado simétrico de sus átomos en el espacio. El apilado de átomos o red cristalina es característica de cada metal, como resultado de esta orientación geométrica de los átomos la materia se halla desigualmente repartida según la dirección que se considere, por lo cual su comportamiento ante una acción física determinada variará de unas direcciones a otras. Para profundizar en el conocimiento de las propiedades de un metal en diferentes direcciones cristalinas es importante contar con monocristales de gran tamaño. En general, la utilidad de los monocristales estriba en que representan una simplificación del número de variables que condicionan el comportamiento de los metales utilizados normalmente.
