This paper presents a method for studying the static response in suspended cables. A novel discretization technique based on Archimedes' methods is applied, which results in a graphic resolution of the problem based on a system of articulated bars, and which defines a finite cable element.Parabolic approximation of the cable is studied. The proposed model allows manual calculation. It can solve the problem via three iterations whose equations are drawn from intuitive graphics and with errors less than 2% from the first iteration. Therefore, it represents an important didactic innovation both for professional training and the first engineering courses in the electrical branch.Key Words: element of length; Archimedes; transcendental equation; parabolic profile; finite elements; graphical statics; electrical vocational training
