In 1892 the textile factory of La Encartada was built on the outskirts of Balmaseda, promoted by the indiano Marcos Arena Bermejillo and four other businessmen with the aim of spinning, making up and manufacturing all kinds of wool fabrics, mainly berets. It is located at km 32 of the Bilbao-Reinosa road near the border with the province of Burgos, in the area between the road and the river Kadagua.
