En oposición a los hornos altos electricos, derivados del tipo de los hornos altos al cok, se ha ensayado el horno de solera, derivado de los hornos empleados en la fabricación del carburo de calcio, para la reducción de los minerales de hierro y otros metales. Su característica mas esencial es que trabajan con una pequena altura de mineral, de un metro o poco mas, renunciando por lo tanto a utilizar las reacciones entre el gas y el mineral. En cambio, pueden utilizar minerales y carbones de cual quier naturaleza, incluso pulverulentos, y obtienen por otra parte gases muy ricos en óxido de carbono, y por lo tanto, de alta potencia calorffica. Esta depende directamente de la altura de la carga de mineral, pudiendo por lo tanto modificarse la composición y la temperatura de los gases variando la altura de la capa de mineral y combustible. Se puede tambien mezclar chatarra con el mineral en la proporción que se quiera, o emplear solamente chatarra, procedimiento de fabricación de lingote, del que se hablara mas tarde.
