En el mundo siderúrgico actual, como en otros sectores, las tendencias productivas se mueven por caminos dispares. Existe una linea más clásica, la integral, en la que el acero se fabrica a partir del arrabio obtenido en los hornos altos con pocas excepciones. Frente a ella y de forma más acusada en los últimos tiempos, el acero obtenido en horno eléctrico, utilizando como materias primas básicas la chatarra, los prereducidos y algún otro aportador de hierro. En 1996. el 64 % del acero se o vía horno alto y el resto, 36 % vía horno eléctrico. Uno u otro proceso son elegidos en a de distintos criterios: oportunidades de negocio, calidades a fabricar, zonas de implantacion, coste de los recursos energéticos, inestabilidad del mercado, coste de las materias primas, etc. Cada método tiene detractores y afines. Acaso ambos estén justificados en función de determinados parámetros. No vamos a polemizar en el tema.
