ABSTRACT The development of the nanotechnology, with its advantages and disadvantages, is an unstoppable reality that is producing social and economic important changes. In this paper, through the analysis of the system of patents, centered in the reference offices, the American, the European and the Japanese, nanotechnology’s patents are characterized by their geographical origin and applicant, taking out interesting conclusions on who lead this process of change. Key words: nanotechnology, schumpeter waves, patents, technological gap.
