Como sabemos el sistema de protección empleado con mayor frecuencia en el dibujo tecnico industrial es el Diedrico que tiene como principal inconveniente el ser poco descriptivo. La Axonometria resuelve en gran parte esta dificultad, ya que escoge el plano del dibujo en una posición respecto a la figura espacial, tal que en esta proyección aparezca la imagen dando la sensación de estar observando el objeto. En lo que sigue nos vamos a referir únicamente a la Axonometria ortogonal (rayos proyectantes perpendiculares al plano del dibujo) y sistema trirectúngulo de ejes coordenados de referencia. Ninguna de las tres direcciones principales que pueden considerarse en la figura a proyectar (longitud, anchura o profundidad y altura) debe ser paralela o perpendicular al plano del dibujo, para que la imagen dibujada sea axonométrica. La obtención de una axonometria, a partir del sistema diédrico, nos obligaría a la representación de una vista auxiliar doble (dos cambios de plano) figura 1).
