En los 80 desde que Heike Kamerling Onnes descubrió la superconductividad, se ha aprendido macho acerca de los superconductores, y, sin embargo, sus ideas iniciales sobre las aplicaciones practicas continúan siendo relevantes. En 1911 quedó sorprendido al encontrar que el mercurio enfriado por helio liquido a 4° K, perdia toda su resistencia electrica; dos años mas tarde, despues de observar la superconductividad en el estano y el plomo a 4° K, escribió: "El estaño y el plomo, al ser materiales facilmente "trabajables", permiten ahora realizar toda clase de experimentos electricos con aparatos sin resistencia... El caracter extraordinario de este estado (superconductor) puede muy bien ser puesto de manifiesto en la solucion del problema de producir campos magneticos intensos con la ayuda de bobinas sin núcleos de hierro". Estos nucleos tienen dos inconvenientes: son muy pesados y tienen una capacidad limitada de amplificar el campo magnetico creado por las corrientes en las bobinas que les rodean.
