ABSTRACT Optimization of heat exchanger network involves manipulacion of the process arangement while studying the variables of each arrangement to arrive at the optimal process. In Chispaper a thermodynamically oriented method is presented for the synthesis of heat exchanger networks. The method reduces computational effort by linearizing the energy balance equations. The problem is solved in three stages. In the first stage, preliminary networks are generated which give maximum heat recovery. In the second stage the most satisfactory final networks is evolved using the preliminary networks as starting points. Finally the optimal exchange crea distribucion is obtained under the objetive function of minimal cost. The results obtained from different case studies are presented and discussed.
