Abstract: This paper is the first of a series of articles on rare earth magnets and their application in electric and hybrid vehicle engines. In this first part, land is introduced as a global strategic and economic resource, China's monopoly on its extraction, processing and recycling and lines of work by countries such as the United States or Japan to avoid their dependence on them. These materials are now essential in the transition to a green economy in such strategic sectors as wind power or pure and hybrid electric cars.
