Una avería bastante común en las redes de distribución de Baja Tensión es el corte del conductor de neutro. Esta avería, en distribuciones trifásicas para consumos monofásicos, representa un grave riesgo para la seguridad de la instalación receptora ya que los desequilibrios entre fases hacen que algunas cargas puedan verse sometidas a subtensiones y otras a sobretensiones de servicio permanentes. Las citadas sobretensiones (que, en ocasiones, superan los 250 V) producen en ciertos casos la destrucción de equipos receptores monofásicos provocando importantes perjuicios a los Clientes, lo que, a su vez, ocasiona reclamaciones que pueden ser significativas económicamente para la Empresa. Asimismo, su imagen puede quedar muy deteriorada ante este tipo de problemas pudiendo resultar esta pérdida de imagen más perjudicial que la simple interrupción del suministro.
