This study shows an assessment of binding techniques for parts produced by additive manufacturing (AM), specifically by fused deposition modelling (FDM). A deep search in various sources allows obtaining an updated picture of the different binding techniques for the assembly of FDM parts. The study focuses on FDM due to its wide use both at industrial and domestic levels.
Although plastic parts are usually assembled using adhesives, welding or mechanical systems, the joining of AM parts needs special attention, starting at the design process of the part. The usual restrictions of AM parts makes necessary to split a big part into smaller ones, which will be later assembled together. The reduction of equipment costs and design limitations and their high flexibility have made that AM devices to experience an impressive growth recently, existing an urgent need both in the scientific and users’ community of methods for assembling AM parts. The use of smart materials is an innovative promising strategy to produce snap fits for easier disassembly processes.
