Desde hace tiempo ya, se sabe que es posible anular la resistencia electrica de un conductor mediante una gran reduccion de su temperatura. Pero hasta el descubrimiento de Miller y Bednorz, que les ha valido el premio Nobel de fisica, era preciso descender a -269° C, temperatura dificil y costosa de conseguir. El descubrimiento de nuevos superconductores, a temperaturas mas elevadas, ha abierto la puerta hacia los más locos sueños. Se podrian construir, por ejemplo, ordenadores mil veces mas rapidos que los rnayores existentes en la actualidad. Sin embargo, quedan por resolver gran numero de obstaculos practicos. Esta claro que el nitrogeno liquido es algo muy frio (-196° C). Si se le transvasa a otro recipiente, desprende un bonito penacho de vapor. Y si se introduce la punta de un dedo en el liquido, justo un instante, se siente una fuerte sensacion de frío como si lo hubiera enterrado entre la nieve durante horas.
