Son muy remotos, según relata Plinio, quien situa el cristal en manos de unos mercaderes fenicios a quienes, accidentalmente, les sorprendieron con un liquido transparente que se endurecía a fuego bajo las cacerolas colocadas sobre unos bloques de nitrato. El cristal estratificado no es tan antiguo y fue en 1910 cuando el ingeniero frances Edouard Benedictus pegaba dos laminas de cristal con una lamina intermedia de celuloide. Los primeros en utilizarlo fueron distinguidas firmas como Rolls Royce, Hispano-Suiza y Lagonda, aunque con un notable inconveniente: el celuloide se volvia amarillento, problema que no se resolvió hasta 1955 cuando se empleó un nuevo material plastico, el PVB, que se adheria perfectamente a las laminas de vidrio al mismo tiempo que conseguia cierta consistencia anti-choque. La indudable superior seguridad de estos cristales se vió controvertida por la necesidad de contener los pesos por la crisis del petroleo durante la cual se produjeron parabrisas de una sola lamina de cristal templado.
