La Ciencia Matemática nació de una necesidad de "contar" las semillas y el ganado de los sumerios, así como de medir los lotes de tierra que el faraón atribuía a cada uno de sus súbditos y que las inundaciones del Nilo alteraban cada año. Desde la primera muestra escrita de estos procedimientos, las tablillas pictográficas de Erech (Sumer) en 3500 a,J.C, hasta hoy. más de 5000 años han presenciado el desarrollo de Ciencia tan singular. Para una revisión no demasiado exhaustiva de este desarrollo, podemos dividir la Historia de las Matemáticas en los siguientes períodos: 1. Matemática prehelénica: Babilonios y egipcios. 2. Matemática helénica: Tales y Pitágoras. 3. Matemática helenística: Arquímedes, Euclides y Apolonio. 4. Período greco-romano: Ptolomeo y Diofanto. 5. Edad Media: Hindúes v Arabes. Fibonacci. 6. Renacimiento: Veper v Viéte. 7. Siglo XVII: Descartes, Newton y Leibniz. Fermat y Pascal. 8. Siglo XVIII: Euller, Lagrange y Laplace. 9. Siglo XIX: Gauss y Poncelet. Galois y Maxwell. 10. Siglo XX: Algebras de Boole y cíbernetíca de Wiener.
