ABSTRACT Vibrations as a problem in maintenance of industrial machinery have been systematically studied by Mechanical Engineers for a long time. However, in espite of the fact that they are also a problem for the workers' health who use these machines, the levels of occupational exposure to vibrations do not seem to be sufficiently considered yet. In order to assess the actual state at the present moment, the I.A.P.R.L. in collaboration with the niversity of Oviedo have developed the project of investigation: 'Exposure to global vibrations in machinery for public works. A study of state'. For this, a sector such as public works was selected, because it combines the use of a wide range of machinery, with the presence of a large potentially exposed labour force and which, in a small space of time, will be affected by the restrictive dispositions of the latest specific regulation, which was recently published.
