Many researchers and engineers have been focused on the rotary internal combustion engines of the Wankel type. These engines have been used in various applications, mainly in the transport sector, but its futures is not very encouraging. In order to be able to better understand this, in this article its history from its creation by Dr. Wankel creation to our days is related. The fundamentals of its design and operation with the rotary pistons in the inner of a trochoid are explained and the pros and cons of such design versus a conventional cylindrical pistons engine are justified. Finally the current vision about the future of the Wankel engines and its foreseeable applications are presented. Keywords: Internal combustion engines, Wankel rotary engines
