Equipos WEG, tales como motores de inducción de C.A., convertidores de frecuencia, arrancadores suaves y transformadores están desempeñando un papel importante con la maquinaria de excavación utilizada en la construcción, en los Alpes suizos, del túnel ferroviario más largo del mundo. El túnel de San Gotardo, de 57 km de longitud, forma parte de la nueva línea Transalpina, un desarrollo de gran importancia que hará del ferrocarril de alta velocidad, con una velocidad máxima de 250 km/h, una realidad en Suiza. Esta línea ferroviaria es la última de una serie de enlaces de alta velocidad, que han formado, durante estos últimos 20 años, una autentica red en toda Europa. Estos desarrollos aportarán para 2005 alrededor de 6.000 km de líneas de ferrocarril de alta velocidad en Europa.
