CHINA CAN BECOME A LEADING EXPORTER OF ELECTRIC CARS

China had never been able to achieve high levels of traditional combustion car production, although it had relied on some Western brands to assemble and/or manufacture them for its domestic market.

Nor had it been able to supply that market with its own designs, nor had it been able to develop a competitive brand of affordable cars, let alone be accepted by Western quality-safety-emission standards: its exports had been irrelevant.
However, with the emergence of electric vehicles, the Asian giant seems to have awakened from its lethargy and, in addition to the location of some Western brands such as TESLA or VW, has been able to create its own designs that in addition to covering its domestic demand has begun to conquer abroad: its EV exports were almost 500,000 in 2021, reached one million in 2022 and exceeded the 60% increase in 2023, Japan, the largest exporter of cars of all types, approached 4 million that last year.
China's experience in the field of hybrid or plug-in vehicles began in the 21st century and was soon abandoned to focus on pure electric vehicles: this was decided by its mastery of lithium-ion battery component products, but also by the fact that the mechanical technology to manufacture EVs is different from that needed for combustion cars, although the industrial set-up of assembly and supply chain is the same. From 2007, China started on a path that was supported between 2009 and 2022 by significant public aid and tax exemptions, which ended that year and were replaced by a credit policy: the Chinese domestic EV market absorbed some 6,000,000 units in 2022.
China's EV construction power is not only able to supply the growing but controlled domestic demand, but also plans to turn to exports. So far, the market has been mainly in Southeast Asia, but the company sees itself as capable of invading Europe in the short term. Seeing that the problem may lie precisely in the transport of vehicles, due to the cost of freight and the image that ships that emit a lot of greenhouse gases give to the cargo transported, construction giants such as BYD or SAIC Motor intend to form a fleet of their own: last January, two ships with 5,000 EVs each from these companies set sail from Chinese ports.
