REDUCING EMISSIONS FROM HEAVY-DUTY VEHICLES IN EUROPE

Following the agreement reached in October 2022 by the European Council and Parliament on CO2 emission standards for new cars and vans ...

(see https://www.revistadyna.com/noticias-de-ingenieria/la-ue-plantea-objetivos-para-emisiones-de-coches-y-furgonetas), a group of 44 major industrial groups have approached the European Commission urging it to propose something similar for heavy-duty road transport vehicles. This group includes organizations involved in or using transport, such as Maersk, Unilever, Pepsico and Siemens.
Although this type of vehicles account for only 2% of the total number circulating in Europe, their emissions account for 25% of the total emissions produced by the automotive industry and, additionally, a majority of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides, estimated to be the cause of 350,000 premature deaths per year in the EU. The proposal of this group argues that as manufacturers already have the necessary technologies for this and, with the objective of zero emissions in 2050, it contemplates that:
- New vehicles should have zero emissions from 2035.
- Emission reductions should be 65% by 2030.
- This regulation is extended to all heavy-duty vehicles.
- Fuel subsidies for this type of vehicle should be abolished.
Companies are also calling on EU legislators to finalize the ambitious charging and refueling infrastructure targets set out in the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation as soon as possible. A review of this text in 2024 should ensure that the targets are aligned to allow electric and hydrogen trucks to properly navigate their routes. Targeted financial support will also be needed to enable early adopters and SMEs to meet what, for now, remain higher acquisition costs than fossil fuel trucks.
