Competitiveness is a complex and multidimensional concept especially important in the growth and industrial development of an economy. In this paper we analyze the competitiveness and its determinants in small and medium enterprises in a mature and consolidated industry in a time of crisis. To this end it has developed and tested a multivariate model that has allowed a microeconomic analysis of exploratory nature of the competitiveness in the metal-mechanic industry in Andalusia. The work addresses two important issues in the field of empirical research competitiveness: a) quantifies the competitiveness from five basic dimensions (market expansion, growth, survival, productivity and profitability) and b) shows the influence of certain sets of internal and external variables on the level of competitiveness of SMEs in the sector. The relevance of the results obtained and their implications for decision-making in the political and business demonstrate the utility of such methods in the analysis of the competitiveness of industrial enterprises.
